Celebrated freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru are yet to be given martyr status by the government of India- an RTI query has revealed. The query, filed with the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) reveals that the three are instead listed as radical youth and militants in a book that was released by the ICHR in November. It may be noted that the ICHR chairman is appointed by the government. Response to the query also has revealed that successive governments ignored the martyrdom of the three freedom fighters, tales of whom have inspired generations. In his query, Jammu-based activist Rohit Chowdhary had asked whether the three freedom fighters were given martyr status. The response was however met with a shocker as the trio was mentioned as radical youth and not martyrs. (KNB)
